Empire BCBS has announced that, subject to approval by the New York Department of Financial Services (NYDFS), it will be cutting the number of health insurance plans it offers to small groups as of April 1, 2012. The health plans that Empire is dropping insure two-thirds of its small group businesses, and will be discontinued in April regardless of a group’s renewal date. About 10,000 small groups are enrolled in the plans that will remain available. Enrollees in the plans that are slated to be discontinued can either move to one of the remaining Empire BCBS plans or look for coverage with another insurer.
